Grain Bin Safety Week 2020

Once again, we’re collaborating with industry leaders and agricultural professionals to support Grain Bin Safety Week, held February 16-22, 2020.

Win safety equipment for your local fire department

The Nominate Your Fire Department Contest runs from January 1 through April 30 and awards grain rescue tubes and hands-on training to help first responders save lives. The contest is made possible thanks to the support of National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS)KC Supply and our other partners.
"Grain bin accidents can tragically impact individuals, families and entire communities," said Brad Liggett, president of Nationwide Agribusiness. "Accident prevention means everyone working together, and Grain Bin Safety Week provides a forum for the agricultural community to help keep people safe."
The contest has attracted over 2,000 nominations and awarded tubes and training to over 100 fire departments across more than 25 states. One of those winners, The Westphalia (Kansas) Fire Department, used their new skills in 2015 to rescue a man who became entrapped in grain.
In 2014, 38 documented entrapments resulted in 17 deaths, according to Purdue University. It was the highest number since 2010, when at least 26 U.S. workers were killed in grain engulfment.1 In 2017, there were 23 documented grain entrapment cases, 9 reported falls into or from grain storage structures, 2 asphyxiations due to deficient oxygen levels or toxic environments, and 8 equipment entanglements, such as those involving in floor and sweep augers, that occurred while working inside or around agricultural confined spaces. For more information refer to Purdue university’s study.
